Dear friends and aficionados,

In the world of premium tobacco, there are beliefs that do not stem from ignorance, but from years of repetition, simplified comparisons and incomplete interpretations. Ideas that even experienced aficionados have heard, and sometimes accepted, without stopping to question them. In this edition, we would like to go a step further and reflect on some of those perceptions that deserve to be nuanced.

One of them is the tendency to judge a cigar solely by its perceived strength. Strength is often spoken of as if it were an absolute value, when in reality what defines a memorable smoking experience is balance: how the tobaccos interact with one another, how the aromas evolve, and how the experience holds from beginning to end.

A complex cigar is not necessarily stronger; many times, it is simply more precise, more carefully crafted and better constructed. There is also the persistent idea that size or vitola determines quality. In reality, each format responds to a specific intention of the master blender. The proportions of the leaves change, the combustion rhythm shifts, and the way aromas express themselves evolves. There are no superior formats, only different experiences, designed for different moments. Another common belief is to compare cigars with other fast-consumption products.

A premium cigar is made exclusively from natural tobacco leaves, without added additives or chemicals. It is not meant for inhalation nor for hurried consumption, but for a conscious pause, a moment of enjoyment lived in the present. Understanding these differences is not meant to convince, but to invite a deeper understanding of the ritual. Premium tobacco is not just a product; it is culture, craftsmanship and a different way of relating to time. Questioning these myths does not mean imposing a truth, but opening space for a more informed and respectful perspective toward a craft passed down from generation to generation.

Behind every cigar there are decisions, time and knowledge that deserve to be understood with the same calm with which a good smoke is enjoyed. We invite you to share with us which other beliefs you have heard over the years, which ones surprised you when discovering the reality.

Write to us, leave a comment or tag us in your smoking moments.
With gratitude and passion,

He doesn’t smoke a cigar — he talks to it.
He doesn’t light it; he introduces it into the conversation.

He knows the origin, the leaves, the fermentation, the vintage, the humidors, and why a cigar should never be lit with a gas-station lighter.
He doesn’t smoke to be seen, but to disappear for an hour.
He smokes slowly, almost meditatively, and if he says the cigar is good — believe him.
If he says nothing, believe him even more.

The Cigar Poser
Here, the cigar is a prop.
Part of the outfit. A macho watch, a falashy car, a monogrammed shirt, a terrace, and an Instagram frame.
The cigar is an extension of the ego — a styling detail and proof that he “knows how to live.”
He often chooses the thickest, most expensive, and most photogenic cigar.
What matters is that it’s a recognizable brand — and that people see him smoking it.

No, he’s not necessarily a bad guy — the cigar is simply more of a statement than a ritual.
He smokes fast, holds it awkwardly, and treats the ashtray as a suggestion.
But hey, every culture needs its ambassadors out in the field.

“I’ve Had a Few and I Want a Cigar”
He’s honest.
No philosophy. No terroir.

There’s a night, there’s alcohol, and there’s that moment when a decision is made.
Cigars become both victims and allies.
Ash falls everywhere, the cigar goes out on its own — but the memory remains.

So where is the truth?

Most of us have been all three.
Many of us — in the same evening!

But let’s move on to the overlaps.

True Aficionado + Cigar Poser = Cigar Snob
Not necessarily a villain! After all, that’s the name of one of the world’s most luxurious cigar & lifestyle magazines. He knows more than he needs to — and shows it more than anyone asked for.
He often makes it very clear that you’re smoking your cigar the wrong way.
His cigar is perfect.
Yours is an “educational mistake.”

Knowledge + ego.
Quite possibly the most exhausting combination in a cigar lounge.

Cigar Poser + I’ve Had a Few and I Want a Cigar = Party Smoker
The cigar is basically an extension of the night.
No rules — but plenty of photos.

The ashtray is full. Instagram even fuller.

True Aficionado + I’ve Had a Few and I Want a Cigar = Fallen Purist
He knows he shouldn’t.
He knows this is the wrong cigar.

But the night is strong, and the conscience is weak.
Tomorrow, he’ll apologize to himself.

And the overlap of all three circles?

That’s where the truth is.
That’s simply The Man of the Cigar.

The one who knows.
The one who sometimes shows off.
And the one who has, at least once, said:
“Ah, what does it matter — bring me a cigar.”

A cigar is not a pose.
A cigar is not proof.
And it is not a religion.

A cigar is pleasure.

El Macondo Cigars
For those who understand.
And for those who are still learning.

We held the first in a series of El Macondo cigar workshops – an evening in which time intentionally slowed down.

The workshop opened with a simple but powerful thought: true luxury is the rhythm of life. Thinking clearly. Sleeping deeply. Moving slowly. Living quietly. Cigars, he says, provide just that – a moment when time stands still and everything comes into focus.

In the world of cigars, each one has its own story, its own scent, its own little ritual. It’s a world that lasts longer than you expect. And the participants of this first workshop had the opportunity to step into it in a way that is rarely offered: by tasting top-quality boutique cigars that Tonči, as the director and co-founder of El Macondo Cigars d.o.o., personally imports and distributes in Croatia.

We held a workshop in an intimate, focused atmosphere, focused on concrete knowledge, experience and ritual. The participants learned all the key basics: how to properly cut and light a cigar, how to recognize aromatic layers and what it actually means to “enjoy” a cigar without rushing.

We paired the cigars with red wine and dark chocolate, creating a rhapsody of flavors that further emphasized the complexity of the boutique labels.

At the end of the evening, everyone took home a cigar – a small gift for their own special occasion. Because a cigar is always a moment that is chosen.

This was the first workshop in a series, and we are already preparing the next one. If you like moments when the world becomes quiet and time slows down – we will be happy to host you again.

Long before the salons and clubs where one could enjoy a cigar with a glass of cognac, shamans used tobacco smoke as a weapon – against illness, fear and weakness. Smoke was their shield, and tobacco their discipline. This old ritual still contains something that every true gentleman feels today: a cigar is not just a moment of pleasure, it is a gesture of strength, calmness and self-confidence. Because while others see smoke disappearing, those who know – see presence.
